Page Layout ⇒ Contents pagination error

I am finding when compiling a document comprising a number of .tex files into a book of some 200 pages that the contents page does not correspond to the actual beginning of a chapter! Is there a way that I can resolve this issue?

Is there anything easy to check without recourse to including details here?

I am using

\tableofcontents options.

is there any sort of behaviour which would tend to screw things up?
