General ⇒ bibliographystyle makebst citations in brackets?

Hi all!

I just started using LaTeX with TeXShop on my Mac recently and I'm still trying to get my bibliographystyle right. I was advised to use natbib and makebst to change the appearance of citations and references and it worked well for one document, where I needed author-year citations. But for a different one, I need numbers in Text and references sorted as they appear in the text. For the last one, I found an option in makebst, but for the first one not. If I choose numerical style (as in LaTeX), it comes up with numbers in parentheses and spaces between two citations like "(1; 2)" and I would like it to look like "[1;2]".
Did I overlook the option in makebst, or is there no choice to this? And if not, has anyone any suggestions, how I could change it?
My other issue is with the fontsize of the references: I would like them to be smaller than the normal text. Any ideas of how to change that?

You could use the square option of natbib:

Thanks Stefan, now I've got nice brackets . But the space is still there...and do you have any suggestions to make the fontsize in the reference list smaller?
