sorry for the postponed reply...
I am not really using a Joomla extension here. Instead the forum is a complete different application -- the famous phpBB (version 3). The visual glue comes from using similar templates for Joomla and phpBB and a bridge that synchronises user information. Both, the templates and the bridge are from RocketTheme -- a leading provider for commercial Joomla and phpBB templates.
