Hi all,
I tried to install MikTeX 2.7 on a Laptop today, but the installation wizard - after successfully downloading the packages - hangs during "extracting files from lm.tar.lzma". CPU load goes to 100% and that was it.
The system is a dual core Compaq with 1GB RAM; OS is WinXP-SP3. All Win updates, bells and whistles installed. I opted for a network installation, installation is under the current user but I am Admin anyway. I was able to locate the archive lm.tar.lzma in the download directory and I could unpack it without any problems using 7Zip. So the archive seems to be okay. I admit that the archive is quite big and de-compression may take some time, but manual de-compression was done in a merely 10 seconds.
Maybe someone has had a similar problem already?
The trouble is you can't move the unpacked archive's files into your installation directory (here it is C:\tex) and carry on with the installation wizard as the installation wizard complains that the inst. dir. is not empty.
The Log file isn't helpful either as it only complains about those four DLLs that keep missing through the ages and then tells me that the installation was aborted manually (oh, really?)
Trouble is, my good old (and working!) MikTeX 2.5 wasn't supported any more, so I had to de-install it and delete it. So, what can I do now ?
Any helpful hint highly appreciated - meanwhile taking my girlfriend's Mac.
cheers, Aldor

Re: MikTeX 2.7 installation hangs
cq - no takers ?
okay, I was able to solve the problem myself. There seem to have been defective packages on some mirrors around last week. When I inspected my downloads more closely, I found that the net installer I had found first - from ftp.fernuni-hagen.de - was version 2.7.3224. That was the one that hung.
I tried elsewhere, and the one from dante.de - version 2.7.3248 - was okay. The installation finished without hang or complaints.
Maybe this helps others who came across this hangup problem.
