General ⇒ HOWTO make figure with large caption span two pages

Dear all,

I have a problem with big figures with long captions. I want the figure caption to begin on the "original" page (under the figure) and simply continue on the next. I get this error message: LaTeX Warning: Float too large for page by 120.81717pt on input line 178.

It would make sense that a figure that is larger than one page would give a error message, but when the figure has a large caption I hoped that Latex had the "decency" to make it span onto the subsequent page. I am using the regular \begin{figure}, \includegraphics{} and \caption{}, by the way, and have used Latex for approximately one year (no expert).

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I need to make this work for my master thesis, deadline soon
