So, I am writing my thesis and my supervisor did not like that the reaction's number is a bit lower than the line of the reaction itself. However, I think this is because of the automatic split that this package does and in case the reaction is longer I assume some part of it would go down and it would all look aligned for my supervisor. Is there a way for me to decide that the second line should start at a specific point of the reaction rather than it being chosen automatically?

I would use the gather environment rather than align for this application.

To break the first equation across a line, use the split environment.
