Need Help Installing Perl

Post by Rayzen »

I am trying to learn LaTeX, and am a total newbie to the whole thing, as well as being only semi-literate in the world of computers and totally illiterate in the world of programming. I don't really know the difference between even major pieces to the whole puzzle, such as what a compiler is, what the difference is between Miktex, Texmaker, etc.

I have installed both of those, following a YouTube video, and all seems to have been going well, until I came to the point where I tried to actually use it all, when I got this message: "Sorry, but latexmk did not succeed for the following reason: MiKTeX could not find the script engine 'perl' which is required to execute 'latexmk'. Remedy: Make sure 'perl' is installed on your system. The log file hopefully contains the information to get MiKTeX going again: C:\Users\Ray\AppData\Local\MiKTeX\miktex\log\latexmk.log For more information, visit: https://miktex.org/kb/fix-script-engine-not-found"

I have no idea what 'perl' is, let alone how to install it, and when I looked it up, it appeared to be some kind of computer programming language or whatever. I then went to the Perl website and tried to download & install it, but quickly got lost in all the jargon and convoluted steps. Is there anybody who could help me get it all going? Any help would be much appreciated. Please note that I would need a rather easy explanation that is not full of cryptic acronyms and assumptions about programmer jargon.

Never mind, I figured it out myself. I was trying to install the wrong version of Perl, which was way too complicated; instead, I installed the 'Strawberry' version, which went smoothly & easily.
