Switching from book format to printable format
What options do I need to enable so that latex compiles with all the left gutters the same, as opposed to the left/right gutters for typesetting books?

With the geometry package you can use both "centering" or "hmarginratio=1:1" to make sure the marginratio both left and right stays the same, even in twoside mode.
so
\usepackage[centering, hmarginratio=1:1]{geometry}
should do the trick
According to the manual, you should also be able to use the command "asymetric", but that hasn't worked for me yet.
