I now have The LaTeX Companion on the way here, and have been going through Leslie Lamport's book and the documentation of some of the packages in the TeX Live distribution in the meantime.

New member learning LaTeX
Leslies book is old but good for learning all the basics. I would just say, today, I would use KOMA-Script classes right from the beginning, and I consider article, book, report etc. as default base classes for backward compatibility. So, an excellent addition for learning LaTeX would be, in my opinion, the KOMA-Script manual in print or as PDF.
