At least the other package, glossaries, is able to sort alphabetically, it uses makeindex to achieve that, like nomencl does.

The glossaries package has a lot of features and is highly customizable. In my opinion this extensive documentation is really great, a lot better than just a short doc leaving questions open. The author provides even a FAQ. Perhaps have a look at the Quick Guide For The Impatient.
