LaTeX Resources for Beginners - Suggestions

Post by alex.blackbit »

in LaTeX Community / General / LaTeX Resources for Beginners is a good list of resources, shouldn't the WikiBook be listed there too? i personally like it very much and find it quite useful.

Hi Alex,

in the meanwhile I've added the Wikibook to the link list, thank's again for your suggestion.
The Wikibook contains much material from books already listed, but it's a different medium and perhaps it could even be improved by our members.
Further I've left a note their inviting users to contribute their ideas using this thread opened by you.

Hi,

I understand this page can also be helpful for the beginners, and can serve as a quick reference

http://www.astro.rug.nl/~kuijken/latex.html

Thanks,

Ten or more years ago I would also have suggested that site. Nowadays, I wouldn't.

that's right, but today there are better alternatives. The mentioned site is using for instance commands that are obsolete since 1996 (LaTeX 2.09), it's just too old. It's dated 1994, LaTeX has been improved since then and I would prefer documentation and references that describe the most recent commands, classes and packages.

Beginners might find www.scribtex.com useful. It lets you render LaTeX to PDFs online and provides a pretty complete environment. It takes all the hassle out of setting up LaTeX on your computer - something that can be a real pain on certain platforms. I've used it a lot when I'm constantly switching computers.

I suggest to add "The Unofficial LaTeX2e Reference Manual" to the list of resources for beginners. It exists in PDF and HTML format and I consider it very useful for the first steps.
