What's the best way to get around arXiv requiring papers that were written in Latex to be submitted as Latex sources?

Somehow all the academics seem to have agreed that everyone has to put all their papers on arXiv. And if we have to submit sources if we use Latex, but we don't have to if we use a ...

When we use includegraphics together with trim and clip, the images don't actually get changed, but it simply hides parts of the images, so the PDF files become very large, and the files are less compatible (e.g. can't be opened with Libre Office).
