So i am trying to embed a movie into my pdf. The problem is that I need a relatively high resolution to get everything (text) to be clear (legible). I view the .avi in an external player and it looks good (everything is clear), but when I use movie15 to embed it into the pdf the text becomes a ...

[1,2,3,4,5] into [1-5] WITHOUT adding packages (i.e. natbib)

This problem is frustrating the heck out of me. How can i turn [1,2,3,4,5] into [1-5] WITHOUT using bibtex, natbib, citep, mcite, etc. ???? It is imperative that I not use anything but the most basic of LaTeX commands. i.e.

\begin{thebibliography}{99}
\bibitem{Author} asdfasdfasdf
\end ...

Subfigure Captions multiple lines into one line?

my problem can be seen in the image below in the red boxes. how can i get these captions to be in one line? it looks like the captions are formatted so that they fit in the "width" of the figure. how can i make it so that the captions can "extend" beyond the width of the figure?
