Glad to see that you found your answer.
Just FYI...you can also change your font in the preamble of your tex document with the \usepackage{} command. I didn't change my default (but that info is good to know). I did, however, add this line into my preamble....
\usepackage{palatino,lettrine ...

I had the same problem and resolved it in the same way as SaulGood. Mine is a simple document without any equations, but it seems as if TexShop doesn't like the apostrophe character when copied over from (in my case) Word. I simply deleted the character and re-entered it while in TexShop then ...

Thanks for the greeting Stefan. True that The LaTeX Comapnion is not the easiest intro but I've done a little with restructured text prior to moving ahead with LaTeX, but that definitely didn't prepare me for what this book is throwing at me. Glad to hear I made a good purchase though. Thanks,
