Glossary
I recommend the glossaries package. It's not very simple but has many features for better customization. It is very well documented.
TeXnicCenter can be configured to produce the glossary automatically, have a look at for instance this topic.

this is my first experience with Perl or the command line prompt with Tex. I am running TexNicCenter on a Windows XP machine
