Yes, it is something like that.

The .bst file is from a publisher (Elsevier), but the article is to a conference which does not support LaTeX at all (they just want a camera-ready PDF).

Naturally, I just want to finish the paper and go on with life. I don't have the capacity to learn BiBTeX or how to design .bst styles. Learning LaTeX by itself is a steep curve, but I think it is worth it when I have many complex equations to typeset.

In that case, modifying the .bbl file as you have been may be a good enough of a "solution," at least if your bibliography isn't too long, though of course there's no point in doing it until you get to the final draft.

Still, you might want to post the .bst here so others can examine it.

I agree with the last two statements to frabjous. And if you are willing to post the BST file here, we may be able to give further help. I guess I know what I have to search for in this file.
