Anyone else interested in this topic should take a look at the cleveref package updated in June of 2007.

Cleveref has macros configuring singular and range references. It also allows you to configure WHERE the hyperlink starts. That is, you can get "Equation (1)" to show up where "Equation (1)" is linked or just "(1)" or even just "1".
