LyX ⇒ Help on equation referencing

Hello,

I'm very new to lyx and latex so please excuse me if this question is really basic.

The question:
How can I label an equation and reference it using in line code?
I understand how to do this using insert label menu and the insert cross-reference menu buttons, but i really want to bypass them using inline code only.

Is there a way to do this?
