I'd like to create a picture that simulates signal power, where signals are radiated by multiple nodes in the picture.
My idea would be to have circles with outside fading fillings around each node. now, however, if two such circles overlap, I want that in the overlapping region the opacity is "equal to the sum" (to a maximum of 1) of both overlapping circles. Say there are 2 circles at (0,0) and (1.3,0) with radius 1 each, then I'd like to have the line from (0.3,0) to (1,0) to be 70% opaque, and opacity smoothly degrading once you move away from the (*,0) axis.
Is there a possibility to do something like this?

i have no idea, if this is possible. But to give you any advice, a proper minimal working example would be great. Right now, we don't know any data, and we don't know if you are using pstricks or pgfplots or ...
