I am a PhD student and my guide likes to check matter in the review mode (in MS word). Afterwards we have a discussion which decides whether to accept or reject the modifications he made. I wouldnt like to give him the tex file with all the formatting written in.

I am wondering if there is a similar mode or something in latex.

There is a trackchanges package that allows highlighting of the text, just like you want. It does not, however, let you edit the formatted document without looking at the source. There might be a LyX add-in that does that sort of thing, but I don't know that (and I don't use LyX).

There has been an interesting discussion on a similar topic on TeX.sx: My phd supervisor wants me to use Word because they can't edit LaTeX. What to do?. Maybe it can provide a few ideas.
