Revert Shortcut Scheme to older Version

Post by csah »

Hello board, first time poster here.

I've been using LyX for several years now, primarily on Mac systems. For as long as I can remember, many LyX shortcuts which used the "ctrl" key on Windows/Linux builds of LyX were reassigned to "alt/option" on the Mac ones. At first it felt uncomfortable, especially when I had to switch between Mac and Windows computers (at home and at work) often. But I soon became accustomed to the difference, even to the point of appreciating it, all because of how Mac keyboards are laid out.

On usual keyboards, the (left) "ctrl" key is usually placed in the bottom left corner. However, on Macs, that spot is occupied by an "fn" key. Switching the bind for "Meta" from "ctrl" to "alt/option" on the Mac was thus brilliant -- it made it possible for me to utilize keyboard shortcuts much more efficiently, since the "alt" key is much closer to the "command" key (where my thumb usually rests) than the "ctrl" key. Example: to insert a centered equation with the AMS-align environment, I hit command-shift-M, then hit alt-M, followed by T and A.

This all changed with LyX 2.0. For some reason (perhaps consistency) the developers "made things right" by bringing the Mac build in line with the Windows/Linux builds. The problem is that Apple keyboards are not in line with standard keyboards, and as a result the binding change completely disrupts my workflow, especially since I primarily use LyX to frequently typeset complex equations -- even after trying for weeks, it was still painfully obvious that the way my hands and fingers naturally rest on the keyboard was clashing with the new binding. It got to the point where I reverted to 1.6.x just to use the old modifier key binding to speed things up.

This situation cannot continue -- at one point I will have to upgrade to LyX 2.x.x.

Is there any way to revert the shortcut scheme in LyX 2.0.x to that of 1.6.x?

I've been googling for answers for months, and even tried to manually edit the LyX configuration files, but to no avail. Please help!
