How to put the chapter number in a box on outside of page

Hi,

I would like to put the current chapter number in a colored background box that is located on the very right edge of the page for right side pages and on the very left edge for left side pages and that I can specify the vertical placement, similar to what you would see in a dictionary where they would have tabs with the first letter found on the page. Thanks for any help.

Perhaps the titlesec package will be your friend.
