I am not sure why I get this error:

It is usually impossible to find a solution for this -- without any error log. Please post the whole log or the relevant parts.

Just a hint out of the blue: Maybe pdflatex.exe was still running and not ended properly before the compile because of an error. This happened to me a few times in the beginning.

Also, I suspect that it is something to do with jabref,

When I have jabref open..it crushes...when I close it it does not crush!

also, I did not input a bibtexkey for each reference it latex yet...as I am still inputting references and editing

do you think that's why it crishes? due to jabref?

What log file did you have mind Montag? This problem and crash are not with LaTeX, but with TexNicCenter.

Perhaps Jabref and TXC are trying to access the same file at the same time?

It might help to know exactly what steps lead to the crash, so that someone else could try to recreate the problem.

Please forget my question. I'm sorry, I didn't check your posted screenshot properly, I didn't see Windows' error window, thus the misunderstaind on my behalf. I don't use JabRef, so Frabjous' hint about both programs accessing the .bib-file at the same time is a (bit) more helpful?
