I thought this was more about the usage of fonts in Latex rather than, say, characteristics of fonts generally speaking.

It is about the usage of fonts in LaTeX. These are the LaTeX Community Forums after all, so all the forums relate to LaTeX. Are you looking for another community dedicated to fonts and typefaces generally? I do use fonts in LaTex, specifically XeTex, that's why I subscribed to this forum, after all. But I also wanted to share experiences about font features. So maybe I'll join Typophile too.
