Symbol for wavenumber in LaTeX?

Post by vince »

Hi! I'm trying, without much success, to write the symbol for wavenumber in LaTeX. It's the Greek letter nu with a ~ over it. I tried "\~{\nu}", but that didn't work. I'm assuming this means nested \ aren't allowed. How do I get the character to show up... is it possible? Thanks in advance for any advice.

You need the tilde as a mathematical accent.

Code: Select all

\tilde{\nu}
[\tilde{\nu}]=\unit{cm^{-1}}
The \unit command comes from the units package.
