Replacing TexLive 2007 by TexLive 2008 in Ubuntu

Post by thomasa »

I have installed TexLive 2008 in my Ubuntu 8.10. This works fine.
Unfortunately, I also have to keep some of the TexLive 2007 packages
distributed with Ubuntu installed on my system in order to satisfy
dependencies of for example auctex and kdvi. Has anyone made alternative
packages or something like that to allow users to completely remove
TexLive 2007 and let TexLive 2008 satisfy the package dependencies?

It involves creating dummy packages for satisfying the dependencies on TeXlive 2007 for the Kile TeX editor while having texlive 2008 installed instead. I would imagine this would cover your problem too, since most likely auctex and kdvi require the same (or if anything, fewer) packages. Or else a modification of the approach might work.
