! Paragraph ended before \ttl@format@ii was complete

Postby tinav » Sat Aug 13, 2016 12:43 pm

Hello, I'm a familiar with Latex but I really can't fix this problem. I started a new document from scratch with the basic code copied below. Without the \titleformat everything works fine, but when I include the \titleformat I get the following error:

Runaway argument?
! Paragraph ended before \ttl@format@ii was complete.
<to be read again>
\par

  1. \documentclass[11pt,a4paper]{book}
  2.
  3. \usepackage{titlesec}
  4. \usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
  5.
  6. \titleformat{\chapter}{\Large \bfseries}
  7.
  8. %Begin the document
  9. %==================
  10. \begin{document}
  11.
  12. \chapter{Test titel}
  13. Some text here.
  14.
  15. \end{document}

Can anyone tell me what is wrong with that small piece of code and what the error means exactly?

Hi Tinav,

welcome to the forum!

\titleformat requires more arguments. Here is a complete example of \titleformat and \titlespacing with arguments that reproduce the standard chapter headings. You can use these commands in your document and change them as you like:

  1. \titleformat{\chapter}[display]
  2. {\normalfont\huge\bfseries}{\chaptertitlename\ \thechapter}{20pt}{\Huge}
  3. \titlespacing*{\chapter}{0pt}{50pt}{40pt}

These command examples are from the appendix of the titlesec manual.
