IniTexmf causes Windows API Error

Postby anacostache » Wed Jan 25, 2012 12:24 am

Hello,

I have installed LaTeX but can't get it to work. This probably really silly, but I'm not very good at this. It is giving me the following error message:

  1. initexmf.exe: Windows API error 5: Access is denied.
  2.
  3. initexmf.exe: Data: \.\Documents and Settings
  4. texify.exe: The operation failed for some reason.
  5. texify.exe: Data: C:\Program Files (x86)\MiKTeX 2.9\miktex\bin\initexmf.exe

what do I need to do?
Thanks

Hi,

welcome to the board!

Perhaps install with administrative rights. Or try TeX Live instead.

The user has to have admin rights.

Background:

The problem is that in Windows-MiKTeX the following code:

(attributes & FILE_ATTRIBUTE_READONLY) != 0

(search for it in *.cpp files) does not function correctly (e.g. install MikTeX to the program folder and then try to run it without admin rights). After replacing the above code with:

true

the compiled MiKTeK does run without admin rights. Of course, there should be a better solution, replacing the code with something that supplies the correct answer to the read-only question.
