You could redefine the internal macro \tagform@. Here I modify the original version, removing parentheses and inserting the dot:

  1. \documentclass{article}
  2. \usepackage{amsmath}
  3. \makeatletter
  4. \renewcommand*{\tagform@}[1]{\maketag@@@{.\ignorespaces#1\unskip\@@italiccorr}}
  5. \makeatother
  6. \begin{document}
  7. \begin{align}
  8. y = f(x)
  9. \end{align}
  10. \end{document}

It will change the tag for all displayed formulas, but I think that's desirable for consistent numbering.

Here's an alternative method using the mathtools package and its \newtagform{<name>}{<left>}{<right>} macro which maybe is a little bit more intuitive:

  1. \documentclass{article}
  2. \usepackage{mathtools}% loads `amsmath'
  3.
  4. \newtagform{leftdot}{.}{}
  5. \usetagform{leftdot}
  6.
  7. \begin{document}
  8.
  9. \begin{align}
  10. y = f(x)
  11. \end{align}
  12.
  13. \end{document}
