autofill w/ align

Postby cmccallum » Wed Oct 18, 2017 5:54 am

Hi there, I've been using LaTeX for years and years, but I'm kind of flummoxed by a problem that seems new to me. I have had the default autofill switches set in AUCTeX, but lately I've been really dissatisfied with the choices that it's making with my equations. I typically use align* to create two or three columns of equations (lists for students). Specifically, the breaks chosen don't make any sense to me (in the middle of a subscript bracket, or in the middle of a \frac{, etc). Secondly, when it breaks, it adds so much whitespace that it places the cursor 3/4 or more over to the edge of the emacs window. The autofilled regions are a mess and hardly readable. I can go back and fix them, but of course if I edit something and hit <return>, the mess is back. I've attached a shot of a fragment.

TIA
Mike

autofill w/ align

Hi Mike,

welcome to the forum!

Did you find a solution already? It's a pure AucTeX issue, right? The output is not affected? If it's just in the editor, whitespace should not affect the output. Anyway, I guess I would switch off the disturbing feature.

Hi Stefan,
Yes, it's just annoying as it makes the source hard to read. I have it half switched off right now (it's on, but I've disabled some of the things that trigger the formatting). I just don't remember having this trouble in so many years of using AucTex....
Cheers
MIke
