Installing texlive without root access or access to /usr/

I've downloaded texlive but I don't have root access on my server. Is it still possible to get it to work? Can I put tex somewhere else and set PATH?

At the moment I'm using mimeTeX but it's not a particularly good replacement.

Thanks for any help you can offer.
