Re: what exactly is SmallSkip and etc.? Topic is solved

You might know that TeX (and hence LaTeX) has different modes. Two of them being the horizontal and the vertical mode. TeX is in horizontal mode when it builds a paragraph and in vertical mode when it connects different paragraphs to build pages (roughly speaking). This skips are added to the verti...

Re: what exactly is SmallSkip and etc.? Topic is solved

They are defined in the LaTeX kernel (a file called latex.ltx ) like follows: As you can see they're not depending on the font size. Regards Interesting. But does whether LaTeX chooses to go for the upper part of the range (3pt plus 1pt) or the lower part of the range (3pt minus 1pt) depend on the ...

Re: How to Align the Float Caption?

Thank you for the corrections, localghost, and Stefan_K. *****Sorry scottkosty, entering that code actually did work, I just didn't notice any changes until previewing the pdf. Great quick fix! How'd you learn that? Makes no sense why lyx would have the default as a centered caption.***** And Yes, t...

Re: Some General Concerns before starting Topic is solved

Is the best way to typeset the book to start at the very beginning and go page by page? Or to do pieces, and then somehow conjoin them all together? What happens at the end after you're done with the whole book and then decide you want to remove a few pictures towards the beginning of the book? Doe...

Re: Can you really self-publish a book using Lyx?

But now I forget it, so I'm starting over. I find it useful to keep notes on useful things that I find myself trying to refigure out repeatedly. Keep a separate file of notes for LaTeX and LyX notes. It's important to realize the distinction, especially when you're looking for help. For example for...

Re: How to Align the Float Caption?

The figure in the float can be aligned using the edit--->paragraph settings menu, but the float caption seems to always stay in the center. What do I do if I want it on the left of the page? Check out the caption package. (just google "latex caption package" to find its documentation. You...

Re: Issue with TOC - 'Appendix' rows Topic is solved

Hi ritaly,

I think a MWE would help here. See http://www.latex-community.org/forum/vi ... =37&t=5838
You don't happen to have any negative space (e.g. \hspace{-2cm}, do you?

Thanks,

Scott

Re: SIGSEGV signal caught

Stefan's advice is spot on (as always!). I just wanted to follow up. Did you solve the problem by installing a newer version? What OS are you using on both of the computers? Which LyX versions? There are a couple of people reporting problems similar to what you describe: http://www.mail-archive.com/...

Re: Can you really self-publish a book using Lyx?

insipidtoast, I see that you're still around. How did you go about learning LaTeX/LyX in the end? Did you read the manuals in the Help menu? Working through the manuals in the Help menu is a great way to get started. They start out with very easy topics and get pretty advanced. Start at the top (&qu...

Re: Software Listings and LaTeX Code

Note that LyX has natively supported "listing" for a couple of years now. Go to Insert > Program Listing. You can right-click on a listings inset (box) and go to "Settings" to get more control. Also look under Document > Settings > Listings for more customization.
