Thanks for the tip pumpkinegan. Downloaded and installed makebst (not in my default distribution). Citation options in the menu did not seem to offer what I need. I could delve into the code but am a week away from submission and two chapters still to write; no time for finding my way through TeX ...

I am trying to order my citations by year rather than author e.g. (Zimmer 1963, Andrews 2002). Using natbib I seem to only be able to order them alphabetically, or in the order they appear in the .tex file. Ideally I would rather not go through my entire document re-sorting every multiple citation ...
