OK, i have found a solution to half of the problem.
thanks for the advice for m-column. it brought me to this site, which helped:

now, setting a defined table width leads to line breaks in the columns.
so far, so good.

but i still have the problem of having ...

is there a way to switch to m-columns in LyX, so i don't have to use LyX AND another latex editor at the same time?

i do speak german, and i see that it's quite the same problem as mine. still, i'm not THAT much into latex to understand what's going on. that's the reason why i'm using LyX :oops:

so if there is a WYSIWYG kind of solution to this problem, please let me know. if you can ...

ok, as i see, it works on your system, and it works on mine, too, using blindtext or anything of the like.
could you maybe replace the blindtext with the following, and see if it still works? because for me, it doesn't.

well, i sort of HAVE to use some pretty long titles. i tried it with "normal language", and the line breaks seem to work fine. but if it's names of chemicals, for example, lyx just doesn't know where to put the break.

on some names, it gets it right, on others it doesn't.
