Same problem here

LateX -> Pdf hangs 30 seconds before compiling
but it does not seems to make any difference having the pdf viewer opened.

Actually Acrobat creates a lock in the PDF. You cannot have it opened in the reader and compile to PDF. I use TexWorks. But either with Acrobat nor with ...
