You are right, it would be much more elegant to have 'Astrophysical Journal' than 'apj' in the bibliography.
I found the sty file
http://cdsads.u-strasbg.fr/abs_doc/aas_macros.sty
with all of the definitions, and I include it in the preamble

Actually, I realized that the source I take the citations from automatically puts the backslash there
and it can not be configured to leave it out, so I have to manually remove them.
There are numerous journals I cite so making a \newcommand for all of them would ...
