I managed to resolve it. \cb{s} is a command of combelow package, and adding the package in the preamble now create Romanian ş in the citation.

I need Romanian characters ş and ţ in citations. For this I updated chicago style (chicago.bst file) and for et. al. I replaced:

first " ş.a. " but i got ?.a. instead
second " \cb{s}.a." but i get the following error

\cb{s}.a.}{2007}]{Li2007a}

You are right! Using \robustify\cite works. I have duplicates because i use Lyx and I mae some settings, but then needed optimizations on them, and used TeX code as preamble.

I use Lyx and MikTeX 2.9 to write my thesis based on book KOMA-script. Right at the finish I have an error at pdflatex run:
