Doh! Well indeed You Sir are correct.
Turns out I do need the extra OpenDoc command (although my AR stabilty has increased dramatically since it figured out the correct path name 8) ).

Oh my God I'm such an Idiot!!!
I can't believe how stupid I've been!! I updated From AR7 to AR8 and experienced the crashing and percuilar behaviour. I assumed it was to do with the DDE commands.
Adding [DocOpen("%bm.pdf")] as suggested previously worked ok, except that AR8 had to be open, TeXniC ...
