Apparently trashing the .aux files fixed the problem. I've since run into the same problem a couple times and trashing the .aux files have fixed it then, too. Seems strange, though.

When I try to compile my article, I get an error message about an undefined control sequence. When I go to the error, it seems to be referring to the empty line between two paragraphs. There aren't any commands in the following paragraph and the only one in the preceding paragraph is for an umlaut ...
