1. I write my doc in LyX editor. The doc has a number of graphics in eps format.

2. I can compile my doc to both DVI and PDF with my eps graphics. Works perfectly.

I have a similar issue. I guess it happens because the files are not found (complex path?).

I have a doc where I want to hide my graphics for the moment. So I moved my eps-files in a folder called 'hide'. In this case compilation of DVI works fine, however, when I try to make PDF directly by pressing GUI button it fails with the following message:
Latex Error: Cannot determine size of ...

Bingo! I have found the reason!
However, it is not connected with the class (I am using elarticle.cls all the time).

I don't use LyX much, but my version (1.4.5.1) doesn't seem to put a \maketitle command in the exported file. You might check the document settings to make sure you didn't accidentally put it in there. Also make sure the document class is set to article (elsart) instead of article (standard) or ...

...Apparently, it is possible to compile elsarticle doc correctly with either frontmatter or maketitle, but not with both of them. After removing frontmatter, it works perfectly.
