This problem has frustrated me profusely, why can't they just get it right? I trashed Acrobat Reader 9 and installed PDF X-Change Viewer instead, because it was able to restore the document view properly. I've since switched to Vista 64 (with a new laptop) and PDF X-Change Viewer 2.0421 and ...
