pictures by \begin{picture} ... \end{picture} will work with latex and pdflatex.
Or do you mean pspicture?

Thanks, I do mean \begin{picture} ... \end{picture} and it looks as if it is one use of this which produces a picture which does not display properly, while all the rest do ...

Thanks for the very swift reply, Thorsten, I will try that, but as I also have a problem with pictures generated with \begin{picture} I assume that epstopdf will not solve that. Is that correct.
