OK, I have lost a day on this, but I have managed to work it out.
1. Update your IEEE Template from CTAN (downloading the zip is easiest): http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/IEEEtran/
2. Clean out any latex-generated files from your project/directory.
3. Test the following ...
