I agree. I recently made the switch from Word to Lyx in order to write an economics textbook. The time is took to learn Lyx was trivial by comparison to the pain and suffering associated with Word, which couldn't handle the equations, figures, and cross-references and kept crashing.

Apologies in advance for what is probably a trivial question. I'm working on a textbook (using the book class) which has plenty of exercises (using the exercise environment). The exercises are numbered sequentially. The numbering works fine when I have standard text in between two exercises. But ...
