To clarify, I wasn't asking for a tutorial from the forum members -- I was merely pointing out that curiously the powerdot authors had not included any such discussion with the CTAN package docs.

To others with the same trouble: This doesn't appear to be OS-specific (I'm having the same trouble on Windows XP); rather, it looks to be something that changed/broke in a MikTex version change, or possibly some additional package installation. Anyways, to fix, include the line
\renewcommand ...
\renewcommand ...
