I am using 'book' class for my thesis. It appears that to evenly distribute contents on a page, LaTeX inserts extra white space between paragraphs. Is there way to avoid it?

Hi all,

I am using the book class to format my thesis. Right now, the chapter title appears on its own page. I would like to make two changes:

1. Make the body of the chapter appear right after the chapter title
2. Decrease the font size of the chapter title
