Thanks for the feedback guys. I still submit that the implementation of footnotes is inconsistent. A user expects footnotes to behave the same anywhere in the document; unless you can provide a good reason not to be able to use:
\footnote[1]{My footnote}
in the author list. It works everywhere ...

I need numeric superscripts in author list
For some reason LaTeX, thinking wrongly that it knows best, believes symbols rather than numbers should be used to superscript authors in an article when specifying an address subscript. Is there any way of making \footnote behave like it does everywhere else in a LaTeX document? These sorts of ...

BTW, I tried using the numline macro as well, which eliminates this problem, but causes my abstract to disappear (?!?). Are there no robust line numbering options for LaTeX? I find this hard to believe.

Line numbering alternatives?
Are there ways of adding line numbers to documents other than using the lineno package? lineno completely messes up my page layout, leaving a massive gap between the top of the page and the first line. I've searched high and low for a solution, but have come up empty.
