I changed it in the xparse.sty file that I had placed in my SchoolFiles folder and it didn't help. So I searched around C: for any other xparse.sty file that it might be using instead. I found two, so I changed one, reconfigured LyX and... It worked! Thank you very much, I definitely appreciate it.

Ok, I did all that. I still actually had to update MiKTeX through its updater, despite the fact that I downloaded the installer from their site. I still had to have some particular .sty files though; they weren't automatically downloaded (and I did set it to automatically download anything needed ...

That code gives no vaguely immediate result in TeXworks, either. So I'll try reinstalling everything. Would you recommend MiKTeX or TeXLive for this next try? I avoided TeXLive before because it was a 2GB download and my rural Canadian internet connection isn't great, but I can still do it.
