Thanks Stefan, but I need to use appendix for my actual appendix. I thought there might be some way to invoke a new chapter, or maybe end the previous one, so that the section is in its own "chapter", just like the sections at the start of the document.

In my thesis table of contents, I would like to have my References as a 'section' (i.e. not a chapter), so as to be consistent with the front matter (List of figures, List of tables, etc.), which are all sections.

The problem I have is that the following code adds References as a section within ...
