Create Figure that spans the Width of the Text

I am using a journal document class that formats the text of the document to two columns. I would a figure to break these two columns (be the entire width of the paper) and be at the top or bottom of a page. I have come across minipage, but am not sure yet how to do it. Any ideas?

The issue is with adding the DeltaPercentError.pdf figure.

Inserted Figure stops Compilation

Furthermore it highlights a \chapter later on in the document. Any ideas of what it could be? When I take the figure out it will compile. I can move the picture to a different part of the document and it will compile as well... but I'd like the figure in a certain part of the document. Thanks ...
